💧 How to Help Your Sick Dog Stay Hydrated: Tips from the Viand Family

Hey Viand friends,

We all know that keeping our dogs hydrated is crucial, especially when they're not feeling their best. If your pup is under the weather and turning away from their water bowl, don't worry—you're not alone, and there are gentle ways to encourage them to drink.

🐾 Why Hydration Matters

Water is essential for your dog's health. It aids in digestion, regulates body temperature, and keeps their organs functioning properly. When a dog is sick, they might not feel like drinking, but staying hydrated is more important than ever to support their recovery.

💡 Gentle Ways to Encourage Drinking

Here are some tried-and-true methods to help your sick dog stay hydrated:

  • Fresh and Clean Water: Ensure your dog's water bowl is always clean and filled with fresh water. Some dogs are sensitive to the taste of tap water, so consider using filtered water if needed.

  • Add Flavor: Introduce a splash of low-sodium chicken or beef broth to their water to make it more enticing. Be sure to avoid broths containing onions or garlic, as these can be harmful to dogs.

  • Offer Ice Cubes: Some dogs enjoy licking ice cubes, which can be a fun way to get them to take in some fluids.

  • Wet Their Food: Mixing water or broth into their regular food can increase their fluid intake. Wet or canned food naturally contains more moisture than dry kibble.

  • Hand-Feeding: If your dog is reluctant to drink on their own, try offering water from your hand or a syringe (without the needle) to gently encourage them.

  • Use a Pet Water Fountain: Some dogs prefer running water. A pet water fountain can make drinking more appealing by keeping the water fresh and moving. Dogster

🚨 Recognizing Dehydration

It's important to watch for signs of dehydration in your dog, which can include:

  • Dry or sticky gums

  • Lethargy or unusual tiredness

  • Sunken eyes

  • Loss of skin elasticity (gently pinch the skin at the back of the neck; if it doesn't quickly return to place, your dog may be dehydrated)

If you notice any of these signs, it's best to consult your veterinarian promptly.
