Prior to receiving your first bag of Viand, we recommend putting your pet on a cleansing diet. This cleansing diet is the cornerstone of our Viand philosophy for over 20 years and can be used while you are waiting for your Viand food to arrive. It is the first step toward your dog's greater well-being. In fact, many of the problems your dog may have can be solved just by following this cleansing diet exactly. You may also use this diet periodically whenever you feel that excess toxins are being released from the system (i.e. a bout of digestive upset or a skin problem that suddenly arises). We suggest this cleansing diet be used for at least 10-14 days. This will allow the body to release held-in toxins. If your dog is showing symptoms of allergies or gastrointestinal problems, it may be wise to continue this diet for 3-4 weeks or longer.
- First, fast your dog 24-36 hours. This means no solid food, but plenty of fresh water (spring fed, bottled or purified) and/or low sodium chicken broth or beef broth. This will give your dog's digestive system a rest and allow the body a chance to purify more deeply. (If your dog is less than 6 months, no fast is required. If your dog is 6-18 months old, we request that you fast your dog for 12 hours.)
- After fasting your pet, begin the below cleansing diet as directed. However, days 1 and 2, they should be fed HALF the recommended quantities.
NOTE: Use lean meat (80% ground chuck for the average dog). Puppies (up to 18 months), working dogs and lactating females should be fed 75-100% more than the above guidelines.
Treats may be used in moderation: string beans, carrot sticks, (any fresh fruit in season or any vegetable for which your dog shows a preference)
- 24-36 hour fast, supply only broth, as much as they want.
- For the first 2 days of feeding, feed "food" for the day in the proportion of one cup for every 70 lbs. of animal PER DAY (not per meal)
- "Food" should consist of 80% raw meat and 20% chopped dark leafy greens (kale, collard greens, spinach, mustard greens).
- For the remaining days, increase the feeding of the "food" in the proportion of one cup for every 35-40 lbs. of animal PER DAY.
- After the quick cleanse and the 10-12 day natural diet (or feel free to call us 1 800-743-1502 and we'll go over it with you) you're ready to go onto the Viand or Aelyon. Just for the first 2 days of feeding, half the proportion of food relevant to the way in which you are choosing to feed your pet as described in the appropriate feeding guideline chart (on the path to wellness menu under canine feeding guidelines).
- This will allow your animals' system to adjust to the new concentrated feed.
- Then increase to the appropriate volume by body weight.
- After the cleansing program is completed, a bag of Viand (D16), approximately 66 cups worth, will last an average 35 lb dog for 66 days, a 70 lb dog for 33 days, and so on. This will vary depending on age and activity of your special dog. If you chose to feed Viand with a raw diet, then you could double those numbers if you feed 50/50.

The Detox Diet (before using Viand)
Doggy or Kitty Detox
We do not believe in the pet food merry-go-round! We know our system works, and we understand that you must cleanse the body before it can accept the higher energy fuel of Viand.
It starts with cleansing your pet’s system of all the toxins that are present in everyday life and that can build up over time. This regimen must be followed. Many have noticed changes in their dog’s focus and vitality, even during the fasting period.
Fast your dog 24-36 hours. This means no solid food, but plenty of chicken or vegetable broth and/or fresh water (spring fed, bottled or purified). This allows your pet’s digestive system to rest and his body to purify more deeply. If your dog is less than 6 months, no fast is required. If your dog is 6-18 months, we request that you fast your dog for 12 hours.
After fasting your dog for the appropriate time period, begin the detox diet with the supplements of your choice. (For more on supplements, please see pages 18-21.) When you begin feeding, feed half the recommended amount of the diet for the first two days.
Changes
When you change your dog’s diet to natural raw foods and Viand, he will begin to exhibit greater physical and emotional vitality.
In about 20 percent of our pets, as this resurgence of health happens, there can be short episodes of symptom-like signs known as a Healing Episode. Symptoms can be a return of old sores, hair loss or an unsettled digestive system. These are good signs (yes, good signs!) and show the dog’s body is still healthy enough to be able to eliminate undesirables. As long as your pet is bright-eyed and has good energy and a good appetite, these periods will go away by themselves. Providing fresh pure water or diluted chicken broth will help you and your pet get through the Healing Episode. Just remember, this is a natural process.
Note: If your pet lacks energy, is dull, not clear in the eyes, does not eat for more than 48 hours, or appears truly sick, a trip to the veterinarian is in order. Listen to your inner voice and proceed knowing that your pet is on his way to greater wellness.
